The objective of weed management research at the Model Farm is to reduce the environmental and health impacts caused by the use of weed-control chemicals. Emphasis is placed on developing precision-agriculture approaches together with innovative non-chemical methods of weed control.
The focus of the research is on the development and integration of innovative approaches to weed control, in order to implement sustainable weed-control practices that will have much reduced environmental and health impacts as compared with current weed-control practices. The central research topics focus on the development and implementation of innovative technologies for weed species identification as the basis for exacting weed control, together with new non-chemical methodologies as the basis for integrated weed control. We believe that this approach will greatly reduce the current dependence on the use of herbicides to control weeds.
